Recently, we had the incredible opportunity to kayak surf on the legendary Bitches Tidal Race, nestled amidst Ramsey Island & St Davids. It was breathtaking!
As we arrived at the picturesque St Davids, we could hear the waves crashing, hinting at the adventure that awaited. The Bitches Tidal Race is renowned for its powerful waves, created by the convergence of tidal currents in the treacherous Ramsey Sound. The prospect of surfing those waves excited us, but first, we needed some fuel.
I found a spot on a rocky outcrop overlooking the waves, unpacked my trusty AeroPress, and began brewing a cup of aromatic Guatemala coffee. The mesmerising scent mingled with the salty sea air, creating a truly unique experience. It was a moment of tranquillity amidst the imminent adrenaline rush.
With coffee in hand, I made my way to the water's edge, ready to conquer the mighty Bitches. As I paddled out, I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer power and beauty of the tidal race. The waves crashed and roared, demanding respect. The Bitches Tidal Race is a fascinating natural phenomenon where incoming tides collide with powerful tidal currents, forming a series of breaking waves that kayakers can ride like surfers. It requires skill, precision, and an understanding of the ever-changing dynamics of the ocean.
After an exhilarating session, battling the waves and finding moments of harmony with the ocean, we decided it was time for a coffee break. I paddled back to the rocky outcrop, where I had left my coffee, and took a well-deserved breather. The rich, smooth flavour of the Guatemala coffee was perfect. It was a moment of pure bliss, savouring the taste while gazing out at the magnificent tidal race.
Fully recharged and fuelled by caffeine, we plunged back into the heart of the action. For the next three hours, we surfed the waves, carving through the water, and feeling a profound connection to the power of nature. The sheer joy of being in the moment was overwhelming.
Eventually, the time came to bid farewell to the Bitches Tidal Race. Gliding back down the water, I made my way to the get-out point,
Later as we sat in the pub, surrounded by the warmth of good food, great company, and the memories of an unforgettable adventure, I couldn't help but appreciate the magic of The Bitches. From the wild beauty of the Tidal Race to the serene enjoyment of a perfect cup of coffee, this place truly had it all.
